DSA: Right to quality journalism on publishers’ sites funded by advertising ought to be respected

Writer's picture: EPCEPC

On Tuesday 20 October 2020, the European Parliament gave a green light for MEP Tiemo Wölken's Digital Services Act report.

The report calls for the phasing out and eventual prohibition of online personalised advertising. Even though we share some of the Rapporteur’s concerns over privacy, his blunt approach poses potential negative consequences for any ad-financed business models prevalent in the news media sector.

In response, the EPC joined press and advertising sector organisations addressing the issue publicly. The joint press release outlines some of the issues surrounding personalised advertising, calling for balanced legislation in respect of fundamental rights and the protection of citizens, and the need for solutions which promote equal, competitive opportunities.
